Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to relieve pain and discomfort associated with neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. Conditions which are frequently helped by acupuncture therapy include hip dysplasia, OCD, arthritis, muscle and ligament injuries, degenerative myelopathy, nerve injuries, and intervertebral disc protrusion.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) it is believed that pain is the result of stagnant Qi. Acupuncture relieves this stagnation and allows the flow of Qi to resume. It is theorized that this occurs because acupuncture changes the electrical resistance of the acupuncture points, thus improving the flow of electromagnetic energy throughout the body. In addition, acupuncture has been shown to cause the release of numerous neurochemicals, including endorphins, which are potent natural pain relievers.
Acupuncture may be used as a primary treatment or in conjunction with conventional treatments. It is a very safe and effective alternative to conventional pain medications which may lead to liver or kidney damage. It is also very useful pre and post surgery to aid in rapid and less painful recovery.
